Facebook’s Eroding Privacy

A recent New York Times article about Facebook’s ridiculous privacy policy and settings got me to take 15 minutes and lockdown my privacy settings. In the past I’ve taken the time to review my privacy settings but Facebook doesn’t make it easy to find all the settings. The NYTimes article, found here, has a precise site map of the privacy settings.

The startling fact that Flickr has a 384 word privacy statement and Facebook’s privacy statement is 5,830 word makes me wonder what evil things they are hiding in all the legal speak. I encourage you to take the time and set the 50 plus privacy settings appropriately. Take special care to verify the ads settings and the information your friends can share about you.

WordPress Updated

I finished the lastest WordPress upgrade. It was a bit of a pain because I had to update MySQL before I could upgrade WordPress. But, now everything is up to date.

Added Mobile Device Compatibility

I just enabled WPTouch on PatrickTalmadge.com. WPTouch provides optimized formatting for the iPhone and other mobile devices. I figured now that nearly everyone I know has a smartphone my site should be optimized for mobile phones.

WPTouch is extremely easy to use and has tons of customization. I see no reason that I will remove WPTouch. If you are a WordPress user I highly recommend WPTouch as a quick way to optimize for mobile devices.

Word Press Updates

In the past I’ve tried WordPress’s automatic update and was never able to get it to work. But the last two WordPress updates have gone flawlessly using the automatic update. You can’t beat WordPress’s features and functionality for the low low price of free. Hopefully automatic update will continue to work and simplify my update process.

Added a Pictures Page

I added the new page because I had to remove my Picasa sidebar widget so the iPhone WordPress app would work. The page has a random thumbnail of one of the pictures from each of the photo albums I have hosted on Picasa. You can find the new page in the main navigation menu or you can click here. The page will automaticly pull in new Picasa photo albums as I add them. If you click on the thumbnail picture it will open the Picasa Album in a new window.

My iPhone Apps

I’ve had my phone for a little while now. After trying out a bunch of free apps and games, I’ve found that a lot suck, some are ok, very few apps are any good. So far I’ve only looked at free apps and games because I haven’t seen thing that make me want to open my wallet. Here is a list of the free apps I’ve tried and still have on my phone.

Free Apps

Evernote – Syncs notes, images, recordings to the web and to desktop machines.
TweetDeck – Twitter app
NYTimes – NY Times news article app.
Amazon – Quickly search Amazon site. You can also take a picture of a product and Amazon will try to identify the product and send you a link.
Pandora – Stream music to your phone over the cell network.
UrbanSpoon – Find a restaurant near you by shaking your phone.
OpenTable – Make dinner reservations on the fly.
Shazam – Identify a song playing by recording a sound clip. Gives you the song name, artist and album.
WordPress – Post blog articles and manage blog comments
MovieFone – Check movie times and watch trailers.
PhoneFlicks – Manage NetFlix queue.
myWireless – check AT&T account information.

Free Games

TapDefense – Tower Defense game.
JellyCar – Puzzle game that uses a car. Game has some interesting physics.
Unblock Me Free – Puzzle game were you try to unblock a colored block.

WordPress iPhone App Test

I finally got the WordPress iPhone app working. I had to disable two of my widgets (follow me and picasa). I’m not sure why the app wouldn’t work with those widgets running. Something new I need to look into.

So far the app seems cool. Not sure how much I will use it. It’s hard to type longer format text on the iPhone. It will be useful for quick posts, if I ever need to make any.
